Chris Harvey, senior lecturer at the Merrill School of Journalism at UMD, will share how to get to know your beat and reporting resources. Former interns will share their experiences, and MDDC editors and reporters will share best practices on working and reporting remotely.
Required for MDDC interns, and open to any intern (or new reporter) working in an MDDC member newsroom this summer.

10:15 am – 11:30 am “Getting to know your beat” Chris Harvey, Merrill School, Chris Harvey has worked as digital editor for The Washington Post, a magazine managing editor, a political reporter and a journalism teacher. In her earliest positions at the Philip Merrill College of Journalism, she directed the student-staffed Capital News Service bureaus in Annapolis and Washington, and launched and directed the multimedia news bureau in College Park. She currently serves as director of assessments (helping to oversee curriculum development), oversees a weekend graduate multimedia certificate program, and teaches courses in reporting and editing. email@example.com

12:05 pm – 1:00 pm “Getting to know your newsroom culture: Lessons learned” Tom Linthicum moderates a panel discussion with Mike Feeley of the News Journal and previous MDDC interns, Jack Hogan, Ellie Heffernan, Anjali DasSarma and Lindsay Weber. This session is in conjunction with the Delaware Community Foundation’s COVID internship program.
